Preparing for “IT”

Our Scripture focus was on Joel 2:1-2, 12-17 and Matthew 4:1-11.

Meditation Notes:

“Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.” Joel 2:13

  • Rend means to tear.
    • There was a time that when a person was in mourning that they would have torn there cloths.
  • We are told to “rend” our hearts.
    • Tear open our hearts
  • This is done to prepare us for God abounding love!

“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.” Matthew 4:1-2

  • After Jesus’ baptism He stepped away to prepare for His ministry!
  • 40 Days
    • Rained for 40 days (Genesis 7:4)
    • Moses was on Mount Sinai for 40 days (Exodus 24:18)
    • Ezekiel laid on his right side for 40 Days symbolizing Judah’s sins. (Ezekiel 4:6)
    • Jesus fasted for 40 days (Matthew 4:2)
    • Often symbolizes a time of testing.

Lent

  • 40 Days
    • Days for us to be tested, to be prepared.
    • Days for us to remember what it was the Christ has done for us!
  • Ashes
    • A symbol of what we are!
      • Just Dust
    • A reminder for us to what we would receive with out Christ!

Ash Wednesday

  • A day when we “Rend our hearts” and “Return to the Lord you God”
  • The day that symbolizes the start of a journey through a Cross and out of a Tomb.
